Indian Street Bridge: Connecting Palm City with the City of Stuart

Summary
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project involves providing a new bridge crossing of the South Fork of the St. Lucie River in Martin County, to connect Palm City with the City of Stuart. The limits of this project begin at the SR 714 (Martin Downs Boulevard) Florida's Turnpike intersection in Palm City and proceed east to Willoughby Boulevard in Stuart. The corridor uses existing roadways as a footprint for the new alignment, by following CR 714 (Martin Highway) to the intersection with Mapp Road, then continuing along SW 36th Street to the River. On the east bank, the corridor picks up again at the Indian Street Intersection with SR 76 (Kanner Highway) and proceeds east along Indian Street to Willoughby Boulevard. The ultimate crossing would serve as an alternate to SR 714 and the Palm City Bridge.
PROJECT NEED:
The need for this project is predicated on the necessity to improve capacity across the St. Lucie River to accommodate future growth in Martin County. Completion of this project would also improve system linkage throughout the county and region, increase safety along both the project corridor and the existing SR 714 / Palm City Bridge corridor, improve access management, and it is consistent with the Long Range Plan developed by the Martin County Metropolitan Planning Organization. Following the development of a corridor report identifying potential impacts related to seven different possible crossing locations, the Martin County Metropolitan Planning Organization unanimously endorsed the corridor of CR 714 / Martin Highway / SW 36th Street with a new 4-lane bridge connecting to Indian Street for further evaluation through the initiation of a Project Development and Environment Study.
