GEOTECHNICAL BORINGS

This activity is necessary to provide soil information for use in the design process. Borings in the water will be accomplished by using a small float-mounted drill, while land-based borings will be done by using a portable drilling rig. These short duration activities will take place intermittently over the next several months.

December 4, 2009:

The Design-Build team will begin field activities necessary for the completion of the design and permitting for the project.

These activities include:

Surveying- A small crew of surveyors will be gathering data for finalizing drainage and roadway work, using small hand tools for light clearing and surveying equipment. There will be several months of this activity taking place off and on as needed.

Utility Locations- This is a surveying function to provide precise location of existing utilities so that the designer can determine if conflicts exist with the proposed design, and if relocations are necessary. The equipment used would be hand and powered soil augering, and some pavement coring, using a truck and coring devices, along with ground penetrating radar. This function can be accomplished in several weeks

Pavement Coring- This function is necessary to determine the composition of the existing pavement makeup at the ends of the project (Mapp Rd. intersection and SR 76 intersections) A small truck with a coring device will be used on pavement only. This activity will take a day or two.

Indian Street Bridge Geotechnical Schedule for Field Operations (September 16, 2008)

Geotechnical crews will be in the field to perform soil boring/drilling activities beginning Friday September 19th.  The field work will take approximately 3 weeks to complete and includes the following:

1. Soil borings will be taken in the FDOT/Marin County owned properties along SW 36th Street between Mapp Road and St. Lucie Shores Drive.  The purpose of the borings is to test the soil conditions for the future dry swales that will run parallel to the roadway.

2. Soil borings will be taken along St. Lucie Shores Blvd. between SW All American Blvd. and SW 35th Street.  The purpose of the borings is to test the soil conditions for the realignment of St. Lucie Shores Drive under the new proposed bridge.

3. Soil borings will be taken in the vacant parcel in the southeast corner of Kanner Highway and Indian Street.  The parcel wraps around the east and south side of the gas station.  The purpose of the borings is to test the soil condition and percolation rates for a proposed drainage pond.

4. Soil borings will be taken at the location of the existing culvert under Kanner Highway approximately 800 feet south of the Indian Street intersection.  The purpose of the borings is to test the soil strength for possible replacement or widening of the existing culvert.
